What We Are Learning About in First Grade Next Week!

New Sight Words: New sight words next week are: back, had, come, by. Please help your child learn to read, write, and spell our new words.

Language Arts: We will continue our unit in Literacy By Design, called Thinking Like a Scientist, and theme “What Makes Things Move?” Our vocabulary words will be: motion, answer, and wave. We will work on creating images using our 5 senses, talk about the difference between fantasy and reality, and practice retelling stories. We will also work on reviewing short vowel sounds.

In writing, we will be working on our writing assessment. Teachers are looking for students using good strategies that writers use.

Math: Next week, we will continue learning about 2D geometric shapes. We will use shapes to help us learn about symmetry. Students should also be able to sort shapes in different ways (for example, sort by size, shape, number of sides, number of vertices, etc.).

Science: Next week, we will continue our first unit in Science about air. Students will be doing investigations to see how air moves water and how air exerts pressure to propel a balloon rocket.

Things to work on at Home: Please help your child make sure they are reading their Guided Reading books; please sign that they have read the book and help your child return it the next day. Make sure your child is dressing in layers or has a jacket or sweatshirt they can wear for chilly mornings and chilly classrooms!

Special Notes: *Picture day is Tuesday, October 9th. Make sure your child is dressed in what you want them to wear for their picture!

* Harvest Hoedown is Thursday, October 18th from 5 to 7pm on the Carriage Hill playground. Please see the flyer coming home today for more information.

BIST BIT: Safe Seat Sometimes a child may need more time to calm down and think. If this is the case, there is a designated safe seat in your child’s classroom for calming down and problem-solving. Your child may choose to go on his own or may be asked by an adult to go to the safe seat in his/her classroom. As part of the problem-solving process, a child may be asked to fill out a Think Sheet. A Think Sheet allows the child to reflect on their behavior and be accountable for their actions.
*Feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions, comments, or concerns!
