Life Timeline

Life Timeline

Dear Parents,

We are going to be starting our next unit “Everything Changes.” We will also be talking about how we as human beings change over time.  As a part of this unit, we are going to be making a timeline of our lives starting when we were born up to today.

We are hoping that you will help us with this project. Talk with your child about events that have happened throughout his or her lifetime. (Possible events could be: birth, special birthday, first haircut, learning to ride a bike, family vacation, starting school etc.) Using the long paper provided, create a timeline about these events. Please include pictures on the timeline. Return these timelines to school by so that students may begin presenting.

Weekly Newsletter

What First Grade is Learning the Week of October 29th:
Happy Birthday: Happy birthday in November to Kalan (4th), Marissa (7th), Seth (21st), Brenden (21st), and Zack (22nd).
New Sight Words: New sight words next week are: away, little, very, us, than.  Please help your child learn to read, write, and spell our new words.
Language Arts: We will begin a new unit in Literacy by Design called Neighborhood News and the theme is called “My Neighborhood.” Our vocabulary words will be: playground, park, and public.  We will learn about synthesizing and continue to work on how to be a fluent reader. Synthesizing means to focus on the way in which small pieces of information combine to give the reader a larger idea, like how the pieces of a puzzle fit together to make a complete picture. A fluent reader reads smoothly, uses expression, reads in large phrases, and reads at an appropriate pace. We will also be working on ending blends. In writing, we will continue our unit on Functional Writing; students are learning about “how-to” books.
Math: Next week, we will continue our new math unit called “Solving Story Problems.” We will be learning a variety of strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems, such as using the number line, using doubles, and using doubles plus 1.
Science: Next week, we will finish our first unit in Science about Air and Weather.
Things to work on at Home: Practice telling time (digital and analog) and reading temperatures on thermometers with your child.
Special Notes: Report Cards are coming home today. Please keep the report card and return the envelope signed. If you have any questions, please let us know!
From the Counselor….
This week is Red Ribbon Week at Carriage Hill. Classroom guidance lessons at all grade levels will focus on the efforts of making good choices to help us remain drug-free. In 1st grade we will understand the definition of a drug and how drugs can be helpful and hurtful. The definition of a drug is any substance that you put in into your body that changes the way your body works. We will discuss how drugs can help us and hurt us. We will talk about how medicines need to be taken properly and identify the differences between medicines, alcohol, and food. Please ask your children about our lesson and discuss ways that the entire family can support each other in making healthy choices.

Bist Bit: Earning Your Way Back Into the Classroom.  If a student’s behavior has escalated to the point of being sent home, the student must earn the right to return to his/her classroom.  A student must work backwards from the office, to another safe place classroom, to their classroom’s safe place.  At each location they must be able to identify how they were hurtful or disruptive, make a plan of what they can do differently next time, and demonstrate the appropriate classroom behaviors.

*Feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions, comments, or concerns!
