*Conferences: Tuesday, Feb. 12th & Wednesday, Feb. 13th

*Book Fair: February 8th through the 14th

New Sight Words: New Sight Words next week are: year, can’t, and tell. Please help your child learn to read, write, and spell our new words.

Language Arts: We will continue our unit in Literacy by Design called Away We Grow and theme called “Animals Grow and Change.” Our vocabulary words will be: mammal, reptile, and young.  We will be learning about contractions and practice identifying parts of a story. In writing, students will continue their All About Me books, adding labels and captions to their pictures and organizing their book to match the table of contents.

Math: We will continue our math unit called Number Games and Crayon Puzzles. Students will continue working with combinations of 10, focusing on subtraction and learning strategies we use to help us solve problems. We will also use games to help us learn our addition and subtraction facts quickly.

Social Studies: Students will continue discussing jobs that provide goods and services. We will talk about factories and how people work together to create a product. We will be watching video clips about how different things are made and students will be able to participate in an assembly line right in our classrooms!

Things to work on at Home: Talk with your child about how your family decides to spend or save money. We have been talking about how people earn money from their jobs, but have to make choices about how that money is spent. For example, families must pay for things they need before they can purchase things they want.

Special Notes:

*Conferences are Tuesday, Feb. 12th and Wednesday, Feb. 13th. If you need to reschedule, please call the office at 402-898-0449 or email your child’s teacher.

*Valentine Party is Thursday, February 14th at 2:10pm. Your child is welcome to bring valentines but must have one for each child in the class. You can have your child write other students’ names and their own on the valentines or you can just have them sign their name and leave the “To” blank if you would like.

* You are invited to our Scholastic Book Fair, an exciting, fun-filled event for students and families scheduled from Feb 8 to Feb 14. Please stop by to see what we have available.

We will be open:

          Fri, Feb 8: 3:00 to 5:00

          Mon, Feb 11: 3:00 to 5:00

Tue and Wed, Feb 12 and 13: 3:00 to 7:15

          Thur, Feb 14: 3:00 to 5:00

If you are unable to attend, you can still support our Carriage Hill Library and shop the Book Fair online at:  http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/carriagehill

We are looking for volunteers to work at the Book Fair.

If you can help by working Mon from 3 to 5 or Tues or Wed from 3:00 to 5:15; please email Mrs. Hilbers at khilbers@paplv.org or call the school, 404-898-0449.

We look forward to seeing you at the Book Fair!

*Bist Bit: I accept help!

In order for students to improve their skills academically and behaviorally, it is our job as the adult to help them problem solve and practice those skills.  What we want from students is for them to be able to partner with the adults so we can support them in problem solving!

*Feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions, comments, or concerns!

Thu, 10 Jan 2013 13:22:39 -0800 Sight Words http://mrradicia.posterous.com/sight-words http://mrradicia.posterous.com/sight-words I wanted to let all of you know what a tremendous effort your students have shown in regards to their sight words! Each student has shown a tremendous amount of growth! The sheet that was sent home yesterday, contained highlighted words that your child still is continuing to master. Any extra practice at home will help out tremendously. Let me know if I can help in any way. Together we can help our students read and write these words with 100% accuracy!

Wed, 05 Dec 2012 05:44:00 -0800 Weekly Newsletter http://mrradicia.posterous.com/weekly-newsletter-25716 http://mrradicia.posterous.com/weekly-newsletter-25716 What First Grade is Learning, the week of January 28th: New Sight Words: New Sight Words for next week will be: three, able, give. Please help your child learn to read, write, and spell our new words. Language Arts: Next week we will continue our unit in Literacy by Design called Earth Explorers and the theme “From Mountain to Ocean.” Our vocabulary words will be: scenery, desert, ocean. We will be learning about how to use a glossary and practice comparing and contrasting. We will also talk about how –ed endings can help some words tell about the past. In writing, we will begin our next unit called “Memoir: All About Me.” Students will talk about the kinds of information we would include when we are writing about our own lives. Math: We will continue the math unit called “Number Games and Crayon Puzzles.” Students will be learning games that help to build understanding of addition and subtraction around the number 10. We will play many different games, such as Tens Go Fish, to help us remember different combinations to make ten. Social Studies: Next week we will begin a new unit called “World of Work.” Students will be learning about the differences between wants and needs. We will discuss how people have to make choices about how they spend their money and how needs are things that are necessary to have a safe and healthy life. Things to work on at Home: Please work with your child to learn to read, write, and spell the sight words they need more practice learning. Use the list that came home highlighted from your child’s teacher. Ask your child if they can use these words in sentences and talk about the differences between words that sound the same but are spelled differently (such as to, two, and too). Special Notes: *BIST BIT: It’s a Problem in my Life Do you ever find yourself trying to solve your child’s problem rather than teach them how to solve their own problems? If so, you’re not alone. It’s easy to make excuses for repeated misbehaviors rather than look at why they occur. Kids need to get to this level before they can truly change their misbehavior. Be patient, this step of accountability does not happen overnight! *Please make sure your child has a winter coat (not just a hooded sweatshirt) for recess—even when the weather is supposed to warm up during the day. Students also need gloves and a hat. Please let us know if your child needs help acquiring these items. Thank you for your help. *PTO Family Night will be Wednesday, January 30th at Runza in Papillion from 5 to 8pm. 10% of the business during this time will be donated back to Carriage Hill and you can dine-in or drive-through! *Feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions, comments, or concerns! It is a program designed to provide food for hungry children at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends and school vacations. Starting Monday, November 12th, Carriage Hill is sponsoring a penny war. Each classroom will have a milk jug to collect money. Search in your couches, your cars, your piggy banks and bring any money, not just pennies, to collect in the jugs. Every cent counts! We will continue to collect money through the month of November and the classroom that raises the most money for the Backpack Program will get a pizza party paid for by Woodhouse Auto (Thanks to Mr. Miranda!) Let’s do our part Carriage Hill!!

Wed, 28 Nov 2012 05:34:22 -0800 Weekly Newsletter http://mrradicia.posterous.com/weekly-newsletter-92044 http://mrradicia.posterous.com/weekly-newsletter-92044 What first grade is learning, the week of December 3rd:
Birthdays in December: Happy Birthday to Tyler (1st), Hayden (16th), and Cody (27th).

New Sight Words: New sight words for next week are: going, where, this, could, before. Please help your child learn to read, write, and spell our new words.

Language Arts: We will continue the unit in Literacy by Design called Weather Wonders and the theme “Weather for Every Season.” Our vocabulary words will be: year, aware, and thermometer. We will learn about identifying the plot in a story, how to infer, and practice using antonyms (opposites). In writing, we will begin reading stories by famous authors to learn about different writing techniques.

Math: Next week we will begin our unit called “What Would You Rather Be.” We will learn about collecting data and graphing. Students will learn how to represent the information they collect and then analyze the results using different types of graphs.

Social Studies: We will continue our unit in Social Studies called “Everything Changes.” At the end of the unit, students will understand that communities change over time. We have been talking about how inventions make our lives easier and more efficient. Students will write and draw about their idea for an invention, and learn about some famous inventors.

Things to work on at Home: Please work with your child on addition and subtraction facts. Have them think of story problems to go with different number sentences. With the weather getting colder, our noses are running! Please talk with and show your child the proper way for blowing their nose and using hand sanitizer.

Special Notes: *The First/Second Grade Music Concert will be Tuesday, December 11th. Mark your calendars; details coming soon!

*BIST Tip: Goals for Life #2 “It was their fault. They started it!” Sound familiar? When kids have difficulty accepting responsibility for their actions it is easy to blame others. As adults we need to validate each student’s feelings while holding them responsible for their part in the conflict. “It sounds like you were angry when he pushed you which made you want to push back. But, at school that is not okay. How can you be okay when others are not okay?”

*PTO’s Holiday-Make-and-Take will be Friday, December 7th from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, and Saturday, December 8th from 9am to 12pm. There will also be a bake sale on Saturday. Students can decorate items from Creation Station to give for holiday gifts. See the order form coming home soon!

*Feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions, comments, or concerns!

What First Grade is Learning the Week of November 26th:

New Sight Words: New sight words for next week are: after, with, there, they, because. Please help your child learn to read, write, and spell our new words.

Language Arts: We will begin the unit in Literacy by Design called Weather Wonders and the theme is called “Weather for Every Season.” Our vocabulary words will be: outdoors, rainfall, and drop.  We will learn about monitoring our understanding (when something doesn’t make sense when we are reading, what can we do?), fairy tales, and understanding dialogue. In writing, we will continue to work on what good writers do (such as using punctuation, capital letters, and making sure sentences make sense). Students should be ready to write stories about things that have happened in their lives.

Math: Next week we are finishing our unit “Solving Story Problems.” We will review the difference between addition and subtraction problems, practice putting numbers in order, and practice showing many ways to represent a number (for example, you could show the number 8 by writing the word eight, drawing a picture of 8 items, make 8 tally marks, and list addition and subtraction sentences with eight as the answer).

Social Studies: We will continue our unit in Social Studies called “Everything Changes.” We will be learning about inventions and how they make life easier. We will learn about transportation and communication then and now.

Things to work on at Home: Please work with your child at home on counting by ones, tens, fives, and twos to 100 or greater.

We will continue to work on ending blends. In writing, we will continue our unit on Functional Writing and talk about how we use letters, lists, and how-to books in real life.

Math: Next week, we will continue our math unit “Solving Story Problems.” We will be working on subtraction. Students will be learning a variety of strategies for solving problems, including counting back, using the number line, and drawing pictures. Students will also be playing games that allow them to practice subtraction.

Social Studies: We will be starting a new unit in Social Studies called “Everything Changes.” At the end of the unit, students will understand that communities change over time. Next week we will begin our discussion about the past, present, and future. We will be creating timelines of our lives, so it would be great if you could send in a baby picture that we could use. The pictures will be attached to the students’ timelines, but if you would rather we make a photocopy of the picture to use, please attach a note. We will also be "voting" in first grade, but not for the candidates you think!! Stay tuned...

Things to work on at Home: Please work with your child at home on addition and subtraction. Find ways to practice addition and subtraction in your everyday life.

Special Notes: *The next PTO meeting is Thursday, November 15th from 6 to 7pm. *Movie Night at Carriage Hill: Friday, November 16th at 6:30pm. Free admission!

*Note from Mrs. Hilbers, library media specialist: Hello from the Carriage Hill Library Media Center. In first grade we have been busy exploring the many types of books available to read in a library. We identified the differences between fiction and nonfiction books, and explored the nonfiction shelves in our library. Nonfiction books (about real subjects) are very popular with young readers and there are many great books that have been published for our young readers. Check your student’s backpack after library media day to see what nonfiction book they have brought home to read and learn from!

*Feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions, comments, or concerns!
